Context and Perspective – the End of Toonami Part 1: For what we lost.

Toonzone:

-insert the WrestleCrap Radio sad news music-

Now, we just have to wait for the fate of Naruto now. I guess. RIP, Toonami.

You know, I think 10 is the magic number for most long standing blocks (TRL ended after ten years eariler this week too), but turly the end of an era. I now perdict this thread will eventually dissvovle into anarchy the moment someone whos hoped for Toonamis death goes ” I TOLD YOU SO”.

Edit: Wait someone mentioned it Idk if anyone answered it or not, but what happens to this board? IS there some kind of Plan A, Plan B specfically created for this situation?

R.I.P.

Toonami

1997-2008

I’m sorry this had to end this way. CN’s ratings has been going down the toilet.

So, it’s really happening, huh? Toonami’s been dead to me for a while now, but I didn’t actually think its cancellation would happen. I’ve had so many great memories with Toonami over the years. We’ll miss you.
There shouldn’t have to be a sacrifice to make CN better. There’s no reason Toonami had to die for the Friday block to improve CN’s action programing ratings. What they needed to do was program Toonami better. Failing to do so only shows weakness on their part.
…

Well, I knew it would happen anyways. See, I’m not negative for negative sake sometimes, guys. Usually, I have a good feeling when something is going to happen. Which is why I usually say I’m “realistic”.

R.I.P Toonami.

it’s not true!! IT’S NOT TRUE!!!1 that is impossible!!!!!

it can’t be true!!!!! they can’t do that!

NO! Nooo!!! *sobs*

Man I must say this is bad, really bad.

Though if this ends up being a trick and the real news is something else well I will laugh and then cry.

Yet the thing is I believe this.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 11 years and 188 days since the Toonami began. And it all started with a 4 hour, action filled block of awesomeness that eventually morphed into what we have today. And it’s even harder to believe that it’s finally ending.

Yes, folks, It’s been over eleven years since the world started into the space age, and it all started March 17, 1997, with the launch of Toonami, headed at the time by Moltar. This popular Space Ghost character’s tenure on Toonami showed the world that humans took the next step in perfecting Cartoon Network’s action lineup…
and yet where have we gone in just 11 years? Where are we going in the next 11 years. What are our goals and objectives here? After all some folks say the new action block is the first step, and others say that the new block will never measure up to Toonami’s potential.
But if the first 11 years have shown us anything, it shows that with a long-lasting block comes risks, and dangers, yet with that same risk taking enthusiasm it reaps rewards… After all without Toonami, Adult Swim Action, SVES, Miguzi and even the upcoming Friday block wouldn’t exist… In short Toonami has given us many failed blocks. And now Toonami itself will be added to that list.
But what should the goals be for the next 11 years? Where should we go without our beloved Toonami? What should we do? After all even though it’s been 11 years, should we as animation junkies, think about the potential of the new Friday block? Or should CN abandon action cartoons altogether, and leave them alone?
Let the discussion continue…
It’s really too bad. Toonami was probably one of the most innovative television blocks I’ve seen in all my years. It was so different than anything else. It had it’s ups and downs, but it always made it through.

I guess the “realistic” people won afterall, but I’m just happy I at least tried to do something. I’m happy the block has survived all these years. And I’m happy for all the memories I have of it.

So Toonami is ending huh? Heh well I suppose we had it coming and.. I did not want to believe it.

Ever since I was a little kid I loved coming home from school and watching Toonami on weekdays. They had Zoids, Outlaw Star,Dbz, He-man, Thundercats, Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho and so many fun shows.

As the years went by more awesome shows came to life like Naruto, Zatch bell, and Bo7.

And it was really fun to chat about these episodes here on Toonzone.

Toonami it’s been a fun ride with Tom and Sara and I will never forget all the amazing events, reviews, and fun stuff that Tom would always say here and there.

Farewell Tom and Toonami maybe are paths will cross again on tv.

I suppose this was inevitable, but it’s a shame that we didn’t get an official announcement until the day it was set to happen.

R.I.P. Toonami – you will be missed

OMG I remember that!! What’s that girl in the glass’ name and where’s she from?? I especially remember her.

I can’t put into words my sorrow. There’s so much this block brought to my childhood. This signals the end of my childhood.

R.I.P Toonami: More than just a block for 11 years.

What a shame. I’m not as big of a Toonami viewer as I was 5 years ago, but it still felt like it always had its place on Cartoon Network.

It’s quite sudden too, so there doesn’t seem to be enough time for any special send off or whatever.

Just got the news…. the reason why I joined ToonZone and part of the inspiration behind my own message board. I still just randomly watch Toonami promos on YouTube from time to time.

Toonami died for me when they started listening to people that hated the block instead of the ones that loved it. Took away the trademark custom intros, started to slack on the quality and music of their promos… and just didn’t seem to give the intimate care they used to in choosing block tone setting bumpers.

Toonami’s why so many anime conventions have the attendance that they have.

Thanks for the memories and I’ll see you on the other side, TOM.

Long Live Toonami.

Gamefaqs:
Man CN is really trying to remove all traces of anime.
The source information says that there will be a special announcement tonight on Toonami about it.

It also says that Code Geass simply IS NOT DOING GOOD. Of course, we figured that out from all the bull**** Adult Swim gives us, but actually hearing it from an outside news source is a change of pace.

So one of your silly litle predictions came true Mack, big deal. People have been saying Toonami was going to die for a long time now, long before your precious One Piece was taken off.
Though to be honest it was obvous it was comming. What now new toonami premiers in over a year, the cutback to two hours last October, the schedule being an hour of Naruto and reruns of other shows. Toonami was already on it’s death bed, most of us saw this comming. That friday Action Block was the final Nail in the coffin. I really hope people still give that block and it’s shows a chance. I fear that many people will unfairly bash it and blame it for the death of Toonami.

And I still stand by my words that Anime will have some place on Cartoon Network, though it is more limited. And I’m not just talking about crap like Bakugan ether.

Well this was bound to happen sooner or later. Toonami has sucked for awhile(Naruto’s alright) and Adult Swim sucks because they just keep ******* with anime. How the hell could they think Code Geass would do well at 5 AM? Anime needs to find a home on a new network.
It is indeed a sad animation history. I hate to see Toonami gone, but man what a weak way to go out.
I know you people usually hate me and I guess you’re justified sometimes anyway, but I just want to say that I share your pain.

I liked Toonami as well so I will miss the block. Hmm with it gone I wonder are they going to magically stop doing TV PG dubs and reduce Naruto to a Y7 rating? To me ever since Naruto started on CN, Toonami was like a mini haven that said “Slightly more edgy violence will be allowed here.”

Toonami wasn’t worth anything execpt Naruto, which I recently dropped anyway, ever since they finished Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo anyway

…..nothing of value was lost, all CN really has is Code Geass these days, and you can watch that on The Fix anytime anyway

the real question is….. what becomes of this board now? just Pokémon? (the one anime we KNOW CN will never get rid of)

We. Are. ******.

That is all. *looks for military bagpipes*

Well if this is true I’ll be watching Toonami tonight even though I won’t know what the hell is going on in Naruto >_>. R.I.P. Toonami and Tom(Even though your a crappy version of Tom) I’ll always remember Toonami as the block that aired when I came home from school watching Dragon Ball Z Yu Yu Hakusho and many other action shows.
Neo GAF:
So what is the event CN has been advertising? I’ve seen commercials recently that show a spaceship passing by the Cartoon Network logo and then the date 10/03/08 pops up. I assumed this was related to one of the Toonami events.

EDIT: Ah, I just realized that Star Wars: The Clone Wars premieres on 10/3/08. Weird, the ship that passed by didn’t look like something from Star Wars to me. Granted I didn’t pay too much attention, I kinda just assumed it was that Toonami ship.

R.I.P.

Toonami was the shit, I loved it when I was younger, especially their midnight blocks. I remember when they did that “event”, where some red blob invaded the ship and killed Tom, causing a new Tom to activate. So cool. I remember reading how some people thought the blob was Moltar, out of his suit, trying to get revenge on Tom for stealing the show from him.

I remember when the good times when Toonami dominated Cartoon Network. There was the Toonami block on weekdays (plus actions shows before and after, so it was like it ran for 4 hours), Rising Sun on Saturday mornings, and Midnight Run on Saturday nights. So amazing.
Wow. I grew up on Toonami.

Granted I haven’t watched it for probably three or four years, but it was a huge part of growing up for me.

There’s the obvious ones like DBZ/DB, Gundam Wing, etc.. but there were always a few hidden gems in the lineup like Ronin Warriors.

You’ll be missed. :(

Yu Yu Hakusho, G Gundam, DBZ/DB, man those were the good old days.

Edit: Can’t forget about Kenshin.

I remember the original Toonami lineup: Thundercats, Voltron, and The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. There were also some old Hanna-Barbera action cartoons thrown in between (like Birdman and the Herculoids). The big thing I remember about Toonami back then was the low number of commercial breaks. Where a lot of the channels were running two or three breaks during each show, there were only one commercial break during each show (and one after). That was way back in like 1997, when Moltar was hosting and when Williams Street was still Ghost Planet Industries. Man, I wish I was 10 again.

RIP Toonami.

Goodbye Tom and Sara.

Toonami is now a memory over at Tech Village.

From one age to the next.

Now it seems that everything has been thrown in reverse.

18 months is just about up. The event has started with the spark … and will end in a bang.

Ten times, ten apon ten times. But nobody wants to hear. No one wants to speak the truth.

Today I say it.

Toonami dies. Its the fault of those that said they wanted to support it.

Let CN do what they want. They have mostly Canadian retreads and Star Wars great white hope of ratings.

The only chance for anime to succeed is to work with those the otaku’s tried to destroy. How wonderfully perverse for them and not shocking to me. Basically, we are back to 1996 – where the business was about to die…

And with not much that hope on the horizon… the event will shatter all peoples comphrentions about animation and entertainment in the States.

If i was anybody on Disney – CN or Nick… your have better get you Live Action shows on HD – NOW.

If I was those three, ill be wondering where is my MONEY for my new tween pron series?

And if I was CN? I state this – if McCain wins – how long will your network last?

By the time this event ends, What ever is left of the business – it isnt gonna be pretty for the states…

But maybe our friends from the South wouldnt mind the next animation resurgence.

Im not talking about the bible belt.

Im talking about the Amazon.

Im talking about the future of anime and animation…

Right there – in a place that can respect it…

I gave you a clue.

The event is coming…

No…

Its here.

Pray you have jobs by the end of this year Xodis.
