NFL On CBS – Where The League Became the Sport of Kings

The 50th Anniversary Season
In 1956, a new era of Television started. Well, 2 new ones. One – Saturday Morning started on ABC – and on CBS and NBC and Dumont (well you can call the latter network Fox because they are based on the old Dumont – Metromedia stations) the NFL – the then 35 year old league started on the TV screen.
No, unforcianlty I or better yet YouTube doesn’t have the old very old intros to the NFL on CBS. But they do have the 1970’s version. The first theme was called “Confidence” which they used 10 years prior.
In this theme, you hear a very young Pat Summerall doing the introduction. This isn’t too bad considering the time period. They also use the same intro for Hockey when they had it back then. Notice the logo changed a bit from a 1960 version they showed during there 50th annaversey show show back in 2001.
In 1975, The legendary Brent Mustburger and Irv Cross joined CBS’s returning NFL Today. Jack Whitker, a former player for the Philadelphia Eagles did introductions and so forth. (back in the 1970’s, they had some players and coaches do a skit before certain games, this ended by the “Presents” years) CBS used a similar idea during the 2003 – 2005 seasons.
The famed CBS stamp on the mike came in fashion here. Interesting song as well, it would have been several decades before the network got the winter games. This was the Dallas vs Minn game where bottles were thrown and Hail Mary’s were made. Also, they went on the road with the first A squad to the site of the game – they didn’t have the huge sets back then to travel with. Also – they used to call the site where the anchors did the show, CBS Control; but that later changed to CBS Studio/Sports Control/Center.
1976 and they still didn’t have much tech. So they did something interesting for there intro for Super Bowl X:
They used the actual trophy! Not only that, the intro of the most legendary theme for the NFL on CBS – “Bouncing Stirrup” (as i call it, there isn’t a good name for it- Stirrup is a part of a cowboy boot)) This is what some called the Ancient Theme – and it does remind you of those days.
This is a look at the CBS Control Center Circa 1975 – 1980:
(1977 part 2 of the studio show)
(Halftime Show -1977)
(Note they started to use the CBS Sports stamp on the shirts – it was sowed in – this is from 1980’s Thanksgiving Game Between Chi-Town and Detroit)
This is the reasons why the NFL changed some rules – Atlanta was so fucking stunned and though they won and they couldnt get them back to there seats. We came back hard in the 80′ season. Trust.
Heres one more: WTF WAS BRENT WEARING?
